  1. I had planned on watching the entire series before this episode came out, but I only got around to watching the first 21 episodes. I considered putting this episode off so I could watch the rest of the show, or at least the other two episodes you guys watched, but I ultimately decided not to, because this show just didn’t grab me.

I was actually surprised that most of your final thoughts matched mine. I agree with Chris about most of the female characters being well developed (except for maybe Patty and Liz as I found them to be a bit bland), but I didn’t care for most of the male characters, at least the ones that weren’t adults. I found Soul and Death The Kid to be boring characters and Black Star just annoyed me (especially after that clip you guys played from episode 50).

II thought Spirit could’ve been an interesting character and that an arc where he tries to improve his image and bond with his daughter. They play with that a little, but he’s mostly just used for comic relief and for other people to smack around for being a pervert, despite mostly everyone else having perverted tendencies too. For example, in one episode he wants to get Maka a gift for getting the highest score on a test, so he gives Blair money and tells her to find out what Maka’s favorite book is and buy it for her. However, Blair ends up using the money on lingerie, which she give to Maka instead, along with a card from her father telling her to relax and have fun with it. It’s a shame because his honest attempts at being a good father made it the relationship I was most invested in.

The best thing about this show was definitely the artwork, especially the backgrounds which look gorgeous. I think I would enjoy exploring this world and setting in a video game.

Like you guys said, I’m judging this show based on the episodes I’ve seen (the first 21) and it’s possible that the stuff I didn’t see is better than what I did see. For example, I didn’t really care for the character Crona but from what I’ve read they do receive some interesting development later on. That said, their catchphrase of “not knowing how to deal with this” was getting on my nerves.

Honestly, I don’t know if I should continue watching this or if the only soul eater I should stick with is Shang Tsung.
