This Saturday morning, for the last episode of our 2021 OCTOONBER celebration, Joseph and Chris watched Scary Godmother: Halloween Spooktakular, from 2003. This was suggested by SaraGeorgeMusic via Twitch. Thanks, Sara!

Scary Godmother is the whimsical all-ages story that follows the first trick-or-treating adventure of Hannah Marie, a young girl whose rotten older cousin is babysitting her one dark Halloween. Unhappy to be saddled with Hannah, her cousin cooks up a scheme to frighten her. But his scheme backfires when Hannah gets help from her Scary Godmother.

  1. I used to watch this special, and its sequel, every Halloween season when they aired it on Cartoon Network. However, once they stop airing it I stopped watching it, so I haven’t seen it in years. Even with those fond memories, I wasn’t expecting this to hold up as well as it did and I’m happy to hear you guys enjoyed it too.

I certainly didn’t remember this special being as funny as it was. That Lincoln joke really had me laughing. Also, one subtle joke I liked that I never picked up on was that the clothes Harry wears have sheep on them, making him a wolf in sheep’s clothing.

I didn’t mind the bad animation, as I can easily overlook things like that if the story and/or characters are good. Still, if you have bad animation, maybe it’s not a great idea to have an extended dance sequence to fill time. That was my only real problem with this special and its animation. Also, yeah, those kid’s eyes could be quite horrifying in some shots.

From what I was reading, these specials actually were supposed to be in a watercolor 2D animation style, but the book’s author, Jill Thompson, requested for it to be in 3D animation.

I’m surprised you guys didn’t recognize Scott McNeil as Skully, as i thought he sounded kinda similar to some of McNeil’s other roles, like Rattrap.

I hope this finally does become a series because I love these characters, so I might have to check out the comics and books too.

  2. I remember watching this as a kid. I loved it as I still do. If nobody recommends it I wanna recommend the second Scary Godmother for next Halloween. The animation remains the same but the story is good and the comedy is still there.
