This Saturday morning, Joseph and Chris watched Velma, from 2023. This was suggested to us by many folks, and seemed pretty divisive, so we decided to check it out!
The origin of the sleuth and member of the Mystery Inc. gang, Velma.
- Velma (S1E01)

I haven’t seen this show, I don’t even have HBO Max anymore. All I’ve seen from this show is the trailer they’ve put out and I didn’t like those, but since that’s all I’ve seen I can’t really say I have an opinion of this show.
Of course I’ve heard of the backlash this show’s had, and while I can understand a degree of it, people calling it one of the worst cartoons ever made just felt like hyperbole. In fact I remember watching a Watchmojo top 10 worst cartoons list and the Youtube comments were flooded with people complaining that Velma wasn’t on the list or that it wasn’t number 1 (for he record, I didn’t really care for the Watchmojo list either).
The backlash almost feels like it’s become a bandwagon at this point, so much so that it actually makes me want to root for this show. It actually made me happy to find a review from someone who actually loved the show just because it was refreshing to hear another prospective.
Listening to this review felt refreshing too and felt very balanced. I even laughed at a few things you guys described in this review, liked the “it’s just scared” bit.
From what you guys, and a few others, have said it sounds like this shows main problem is it’s trying to hard to be funny. Like it just assumes that making everything exaggerated and adult automatically makes it funny, while there are similar shows that have done stuff like this better. The Venture Bros. was a great example of a better show (although that Groovy Gang was only for one episode), but I would also say that bit in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back that parodied Scooby-Doo was also great.
One last thing I wanted to point out was that whole thing with Norville dating that girl named “Scoobi” has been stated to be false by the critics who’ve received advanced screeners, and the girl’s real name is apparently “Gigi”. Plus, they’ve mentioned that Warner Bros. has forbidden them from using Scooby in this series, so unless they change their mind I don’t think we’ll be seeing him in this show.
