  1. Originally I wasn’t planning on rewatching this movie in anticipation for this episode. I remembered a lot of the basic plot elements of this movie from when I had last saw it as a kid so I figured that was enough going into this episode. However, I had some time yesterday so I decided to give this movie another watch and I’m glad I did. This movie was a lot better than I remembered it being and one of the best animated movies of the 80s (easily top 5 at least).

To clear up some confusion, Disney didn’t actually make this movie, they just bought the television and video rights to the movie. That actually ended up preventing the movie from getting a widespread theatrical release since Disney was showing the movie on the Disney Channel around the same time.

Still, they were able to enter the movie in various film festivals, including the Sundance Film Festival, making it the first animated movie to be included in the festival. According to the director Jerry Rees, he claims that the judges of the Sundance Film Festival personally told him that they thought The Brave Little Toaster was the best movie that year but they didn’t give it the award because they thought giving it to a cartoon would tarnish the festival’s reputation.

As a kid I would see it frequently on the Disney Channel and while I’d enjoy it for the most part, certain things always made me feel weird; Like that scene with the air conditioner, for example. When he started yelling and chastising the other appliances, I remember thinking that this was obviously supposed to be the movies villain but then he started screaming and glowing red before seemingly dying. As a kid I didn’t quite understood what just happened and how I was supposed to feel about that.

Worthless was another scene that just kind of confused me as a child, but now that scene just haunts me. The lyrics and just so chilling and filled with dark implications, like the verse sung by the hearse ( took a man to a graveyard, I beg your pardon, it’s quite hard enough just living with the stuff I have learned). Then of course, there’s that bit with the last car where the magnet is coming for it, but it just drives itself onto the conveyor belt.
