I’m glad you guys compared this show’s formula to Inspector Gadget’s formula, because I feel similar to this formula as I did with this one. I can’t say I’m the biggest fan of this formula as it doesn’t take long for me to get bored of it. However, unlike Inspector Gadget, I actually do have some appreciation for this formula, and this cartoon in general, and I can definitely see the influence it had on animation. Although, I’m not sure I’d agree with it being the most influence show in animation (I’m not sure what I’d say that show is, but I think a really good argument could be made for The Flintstones).
I also have to admit that I really appreciate this show from a skeptic perspective, which I don’t think it gets enough credit for. No matter how freaky the situations were there was always a reasonable explanation for them and the monsters were always just a guy in a suit. At least, that’s how it was until some of the later movies and series kinda ruined that.
That said, I do enjoy a couple of the recent Scooby-Doo movies, and I love A Pup Named Scooby-Doo, which has the absolute best version of Fred.
There are also two lesser-known Scooby-Doo specials that I think both of you would get a kick out of. One of them is The Scooby-Doo Project which is basically The Blair Witch Project with the Scooby-Doo gang, which aired in parts in between episodes during a marathon. While this is a funny concept and it has it’s funny moments, I was surprised that it can also be genuinely creepy and unnerving at times too. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LdMZm8fAIaY
The other one is called Night of the Living Doo, which aired once on Cartoon Network and then once more on Adult Swim. It was more of a play on the Scooby-Doo celebrity crossovers as it has them meeting Gary Coleman and staying at a hotel that’s runned by David Cross. It’s got some really great jokes making fun of the formula, and a hilarious ending. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pFryS6RIXIQ
You can also watch Scooby-Doo WHere Are You on Tubi, which is a free streaming service. However, since it’s free that means there are ads in it, but it doesn’t play too many ads, so it might be an option in you want to avoid HBO Max. Apparently there’s a rumor, nothing confirmed, that the reason Discovery merged with Warner Bros. was so they could gut it of any media that might be seen as undesirable so they could later sell it to Universal.
Hey! Sorry the spam filter grabbed your comment again. I’ll look and see if there’s some way we can try and override the filter! I vaguely remember The Scooby-Doo Project!!
Thank you for restoring my comment.
