Listening to this episode made me feel like a kid again, as in everyone loves this show while I don’t.
This show just never clicked with me but all the other kids loved it, so I would force myself to watch it which I think just made me dislike it even more. Despite that I can agree with you guys on a few things, like Dr. Claw being a cool villain, it being great that it has a competent female lead, and the concept of the main character actually being a bumbling doofus being a great idea (hell, I love Hong Kong Phooey has that exact same concept and I love that show a lot more).
Honestly, I think my biggest problem with this show is Gadget himself. While I love the concept of his character I think his antics just kinda wore thin with me and I just didn’t find it as funny after a while.
I can’t defend the Inspector Gadget movie, because it was indeed horrible, but I will defend Matthew Broderick (though not as Inspector Gadget). He had several good movies after Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, including Glory, The Lion King, The Cable Guy, and Election. To a lesser extent, Jamie Kennedy did have Bowfinger after Scream, as well as The Jamie Kennedy Experience.
As for the live-action versions of cartoons, I think you got it right about it being cheaper, but I also think some people feel like it’s more legitimate if it’s in live action, since some people mistakenly brush animation off as kids stuff. I think there’s also a curiosity as to how animated things are going to transfer into live action. For example, I very curious as to how the aliens in Lilo and Stitch are going to look like in live action when that movie comes out (I’m also looking forward to it based of the director doing a really good indie movie recently called Marcel The Shell With Shoes On, a very sweet and heartwarming movie that’s style would fit perfectly for Lilo and Stitch).
When it comes to these live-action adaptions, I actually prefer the 2016 live-action Jungle Book over the animated movie. Also, while I’m not sure I would say it’s better than the cartoon show, I really enjoyed the live-action George of the Jungle movie.
